“It was an infiltration bid, which was foiled. Four AK-47 rifles and war-like stores have been recovered so far. The operation is on,” said Col. Kumar.
The Army said two more infiltration bids were foiled in Kupwara’s Tanghdar Sector and Bandipora district’s Gurez Sector.
Preliminary reports suggest exchange of fire in these areas between the security forces and militants.
Encounter on in Poonch; policeman killed
In Pir Panjal valley’s Poonch district, militants opened fire near the Army’s 93 Brigade headquarters. The militants are believed to be holed up in a residential house and an under-construction mini-secretariat.
One policeman, identified as Raj Kumar, died in the attack. One civilian has sustained injuries in the ongoing operation.
Civilian succumbs to injuries
The death toll of civilians killed in the the ongoing unrest has risen to 78. Javaid Ahmad Dar succumbed to his injuries in a Srinagar hospital on Sunday. He was hit by bullets in the lower limbs in central Kashmir’s Budgam district on Saturday.
Meanwhile, the security forces raided and foiled two rallies in Anantnag and Pulwama districts. Over 100 civilians were injured in Pulwama’s Kareemabad area.
At least 15 people have been shifted to a Srinagar hospital. Locals claimed the crackdown was backed by the Army personnel.
The police claimed the clash broke out when the security forces entered the village to nab militants after a tip-off. The locals alleged the security forces damaged public property, vehicles and homes.
